CHAPTER ELEVEN

CA’MAHRI

“Come on, Ms. Bernice,” I urged, reaching to help my last resident of the night out of her recliner. Usually, I would’ve had her in bed by now, but she’d insisted on watching The Late Show because Ari Lennox was on, and she swore that was her great-niece. I didn’t believe that shit for a minute, and if it wasn’t for the charting I needed to do, then her ass would’ve been in bed like everybody else.

“Don’t rush me, girl! I’m tryna see my great-niece!” she huffed, swatting my hand away with her lips poked out since she didn’t have her teeth in.

“You already saw her, Ms. Bernice, don’t you remember?” It was really messed up how bad Alzheimer’s affected her in the time that I’d been working there. Most nights she could barely remember her own name, and since she rarely got visits, she wouldn’t have known one of her family members if they were right in her face. Confused, she looked up at me with squinted eyes, and my heart broke for her.

“I did?”

“Yes, she sung your favorite song too, girl!” I told her excitedly, and the lie had her giving me a toothless grin. After that, she allowed me to help her out of her chair and into the bathroom to help her prepare for bed. By the time I finally had her tucked in, her eyelids were drooping and I knew it wouldn’t be long before she was snoring.

Since all of my work was finally done, I went to sit down behind the nurses’ station and let out a content sigh once I did. After eight hours on my feet, it felt good to finally relax, and I was hoping that none of my call lights went off before the next shift arrived to take over. I planned to pull up a good book and read a little, but as soon as I went into the Kindle app, a text was coming through from Dinero. My lips instantly turned up into a smile seeing his name, and I hurried to open it up.

Dinero: What’s good, beautiful? How your night going?

It was crazy how I’d only known him for such a short time, and he was already more concerned about me than a nigga I had spent six months with. Walt had never asked how my night was and sadly, I had gotten used to it. In the weeks we’d been talking, Dinero went out of his way to hit me up at least once a day to ask how I was doing, and he made sure to have me check in to let him know I was home on the nights I worked. It was out of character from what I knew of him, but it was also very sweet and kept a smile on my face.

Me: Nothing much, can’t wait to get off tho’, ‘cause my feet are killing me, lol. How are you?

I watched the bubbles pop up indicating that he was texting back and raised a brow.
